Being in the tourism industry since 1999 allowed me to witness how the industry has evolved from a non-heard place to the lifestyle destination it is today. La Union is now a landmark having been recognized as the Surfing Destination of the North in the country and has been the go-to place for the young - in age and in heart.
La Union Tourism
Being from this province since day one, has made me strive and contribute to the success of the province, tourism-wise. I was active in promoting this place as the Tourism Office for the City Government of San Fernando, La Union. I won't forget the time that during most of our travel and tourism drives in Manila, people do not know where La Union is. I was even asked how far are we from Pagudpod! Thats like the edge of Luzon island and La Union is much nearer from Manila. Can you imagine the frustration of a young tourism officer with a messy bun back then. So I promised myself to be part of the movement to make sure that La Union will be put on the map sooner or later.
It took us, give or take, 10 years to see the fruits of our efforts. The government, private sectors, NGOs and the likes are in sync to massively promote La Union and be their destination for their next get away. There wasn't really so much to see in La Union but if you ask me how we did it, I would say the people of this humble province made all the difference. The surfers, the resort owners, the community, the diversity counted a lot as to putting La Union on the map.
Fast forward 2010, it was already easier to love La Union. Business was vibrant, tourist are more vibrant! It gave a lot of opportunity for the community to make a living out of this place. It became the go-to place for surfers and enthusiast, food haven for food lovers, lifestyle destination for influencers and brand ambassadors, party place for those who still have energy from all the days surf and work.
Messy Bun Thoughts
I love the food here personally as it offers local foods and talented cooks from La Union and attracted young entrepreneurs passionate with food to come and diversify the industry in the province. As a local, we do not need to go away to eat Mexican food, Korean, American, French, Greek, name it, we have it all here!
And what about the view? Imagine having your favorite drink served while watching surfers cut waves or just plainly the magnificent sunsets La Union has been known for.
Line Up Bistro La Union
Line Up Bistro is at the center of it all. This was the headquarters of the 2020 SEAGAMES where for the first time in history, surfing was considered as an olympic sport. The best waves in La Unions sits right outside the bistro's deck. It serves the best breakfast as it comes with a good view of the surf. It's a place to hang out after a long day of surfing and fill up your hungry belly and get ready for your next set plunge of surf. Not literally surfing? Just surfing the net? It's still the best place for an ambient beach view. Best place to have coffee, tea or margarita. Line Up Bistro is open daily from 7 am to 11pm. You can check it out when you next plan to travel in La Union and see and experience yourself what all this Messy Bun is bragging all about.
